2007 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Bigger, faster, safer. introductionwatching the recent evolution of the toyota rav4, one might conclude that, like children, little sport-utility vehicles eventually grow up. The next they've grown longer, wider, and taller, with family-size, three-row seating capacity and available v6 power. Cute just isn't enough anymore, and the rav4 is a lot more than cute.  after a complete redesign for 2006, the 2007 rav4 gets significant safety improvements. Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted, side-impact airbags are now standard equipment, as are roll-sensing side-curtain airbags for first and second-row seats. Both systems were extra-cost options last year. Electronic entertainment options have also been updated.  the recent redesign addressed the buying public's demand for power and space among compact suvs. The rav4's length increased by 14 inches, creating more headroom and legroom for second-row passengers, and increased shoulder room all around. Cargo capacity grew by five cubic feet. Its 3. 5-liter v6 generates 269 horsepower, almost too much for the package, although it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. A v6 rav4 can haul as many as seven people and tow up to 3500 pounds, and it really scoots. Each model adds more features.  all three trim levels are available with a 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 and five-speed automatic transmission, increasing the price as follows: base 22,885), sport 24,340) and limited 25,020). All v6 rav4's come with downhill assist control (dac) and hill-start assist control (hac).  any of the six models is available with full-time all-wheel drive 1,400).  standard features for all rav4s include air conditioning, cruise control, am/fm/cd stereo with six speakers, power windows, keyless-remote locking, manually adjustable passenger seats, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and auto-off headlamps. The v6 is upgraded with p225/65r17 tires on styled steel wheels. All models come with a full-sized spare.  options at the base level include a third-row seat 950); an in-dash, six-cd changer 200); a selection of 17-inch wheels, both styled steel 120) and aluminum 440-560); cargo cover 140); roof rack side rails 220); daytime running lights 40); and a towing package for the v6 160) that includes a heavy-duty radiator and fan, transmission oil cooler and 150-amp alternator. The tow package increases the rav4's pulling capacity from 2000 to 3500 pounds.  the rav4 sport adds a roof rack with cross bars; rear privacy glass; fog lamps; sport-tuned suspension; p235/55r18 tires on alloy wheels; and combination hard/soft spare tire cover. Options expand to include a jbl premium stereo with nine speakers, a subwoofer and steering-wheel controls, 890); and power tilt-and-slide moonroof 900). The third-row seat is not offered on the sport.  the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control; the six-cd changer with auxiliary input jack; power-adjustable driver seat; heated outside mirrors; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear privacy glass; cargo cover and other amenities. Outside, limited is distinguished by a chrome grille; fog lamps; p225/65r17 tires on alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 700-810, depending on engine and drive combination), heated leather seats 1,490) and the jbl stereo 640). A rear-seat entertainment system 1,705) is available only on limited v6.  safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist (ba) and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc) and traction control (trac).  we're glad to see that toyota has made curtain airbags standard for 2007, because they are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents. Side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design of the 2007 model is more serious and more substantive than those built a few years ago. There are fewer superfluous curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished appearance.  this latest rav4's front end contains all the same elements found on older models, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. A wide track gives the rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers.  a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. From the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Taillights are positioned fairly high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate visually balances the spare by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside, the 2007 rav4 is as good as ever, but not necessarily better. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish it from earlier models. The most noteworthy changes made for 2006 (and carried over this year) are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues.  the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat enables almost any size driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats improve the viewing range through the inside mirror.  the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, without bolsters. It's no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch.  the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities.  the rav4's 104. 7-inch wheelbase delivers more than space for a third row of seats. It also allows almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom, compared to models built before 2006. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch.  the honda cr-v, the rav4's major competitor, has been redesigned for 2007, but the toyota still either exceeds it significantly, or trails it by a fraction, in headroom and legroom, both front and rear. But the cr-v does not offer a third-row seat. Maximum cargo volume (with all seats stowed) is nearly identical: 73. 0 cubic feet for the toyota, 72. 9 for the honda.  the only competitor that comes with a standard third-row seat, the suzuki xl7, is also all-new for 2007. It provides more headroom than the rav4, particularly in the third row (by a significant 1. 6 inches). In legroom, the xl7 gives up half an inch to the rav4 up front, but gets that half inch back in the second row, and betters the toyota by almost a full inch in the third row. But in hip room, it's the xl7 that loses by 1. 6 inches up front, gains a scant 0. 7 inch in the middle, and then loses to the toyota by a whopping 5. 1 inches in the third row.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who's owned a rav4. The placement and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good, as is the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. It's all styled differently, however. The dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we divined in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials a. 2006 cadillac cts review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More sport for the great american sports sedan. introductionthe cadillac cts kicked off a renaissance at cadillac and once and for all dispelled the idea that american luxury and sports sedan are mutually exclusive concepts. With sporty handling, exhilarating acceleration and powerful braking, the cts is a sports sedan in the truest sense.  introduced as a 2003 model, the cts launched an edgy new styling theme at cadillac and immediately grabbed the spotlight. The automotive press praised the dynamic qualities built into its superb rear-wheel-drive chassis. A torrent of new models has followed from cadillac, all very good in their own right, but the cts set the mold.  since its launch, the cts has been improved and refined. For 2006, a new sport performance option enhances its sporting character, while a sport appearance package can give every cts the look of the mighty, corvette-powered cts-v. These options complement the new generation of v6 engines and transmissions introduced for 2005.  all of the cts drivelines are smooth, quiet and powerful, with the latest technology and advanced electronic controls throughout. Yet the manual is remarkable for its smooth shifting and easygoing clutch. The cts-v is a great hot rod, but the other cts models are far more pleasant for daily driving.  we love the cts's balance of good ride quality and fine handling. We haven't been happy with its austere interior, but cadillac has tried to soften it a bit and make it more inviting. It has helped reacquaint the world with cadillac's century-long tradition of technology and design innovation. In short, the cts presents a real, uniquely american alternative to traditional class leaders like the bmw 3 series and audi a4. lineupthe 2006 cadillac cts is available with two engines: a 210-horsepower, variable valve timing 2. 8-liter v6 30,515) and a 255-horsepower 3. 8-liter vvt v6 33,160). The package also includes xenon high-intensity discharge headlights. A new sport appearance package includes all the performance gear in performance package and lots of appearance tweaks: unique 18-inch wheels, restyled rocker moldings, dual exhaust tips, wire mesh grille work and a rear spoiler. In short, it's the look of the crazy-fast cts-v for less money.  the dvd navigation system 2,995) includes xm satellite radio with a three-month subscription and a bose stereo upgrade with six-cd changer and eight speakers, plus the new xm nav traffic system, which delivers real-time traffic flow information straight to the nav screen. Popular stand-alone options include a power glass sunroof with one-touch operation 1,200), the bose stereo and cd changer 1,000), and a split-folding rear seat 400).  the limited-production cts-v 50,675) comes stuffed with the 5. 7-liter ls6 v8 engine developed for the chevrolet corvette, generating 400 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. This monster engine comes mated to a tremec six-speed manual gearbox (sorry, no automatic option here). The package includes big brembo brakes and other high-performance tweaks.  safety features on all cts models include active features such as traction control and anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake proportioning, which balances the braking front and rear. There are eight airbags: front, side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers, and curtain-style head protections airbags on each side. In short, the cts comes with the full complement of safety features expected in a modern luxury car. walkaroundthe cts brought cadillac's new art & science design vocabulary to the marketplace. Embodied in the controversial evoq concept car, art & science is a festival of wedges, sharp junctions and chiseled angles that can be seen throughout the generation of cadillacs that followed, starting with the cts. This edgy design is certainly distinctive. Love it or hate it, there's no confusing a new cadillac with anything else on the road.  for all its futuristic themes, art & science is supposed to hark back to the cadillac tradition of vertical headlamps and tail lamps, which dates from the late 1950s through the '60s. Viewed from the front, the cts is imposing, with its large louvered grille framed by sharp, vertical headlamps. The front air dam is all business, with simple rectangular foglights and a long narrow intake near the skirt.  the cts also has a short, high rear deck with tall, vertical tail lamps. The view from the rear is broken up by the indentation cut widely around the license plate in a contrasting color. The cts-v looks a bit better here, thanks to body colored plastic. The rear view is evocative either way.  yet given the power of the front and rear ends, the cts's slab sides seem a little weak in comparison. It looks best with the largest wheels (18 inches) available.  for 2006, the v6-powered cts can be trimmed with the look of the 400-horsepower cts-v, without the monster engine. We like the optional sport appearance package, with fat, 18-inch wheels, aggressive rocker moldings, dual exhaust tips and a rear spoiler, mostly because the v6-powered cts models deliver enough sporting performance to pull it off. There are also three new paint colors: radiant bronze, blackberry and the flashy but expensive infrared option 900). interiorthe angular theme obvious in the exterior styling continues inside the cadillac cts. If critics have panned any particular thing about the cts since its launch in 2003, it's the interior aesthetics. The cts is sold in europe and the interior reflects that. It projects an idea that driving is serious business. Visually, it's an austere cabin, lacking the warmness of the recently launched cadillac sts.  cadillac seems to have taken some of that criticism to heart, because many of the changes since the cts was introduced are focused inside. The appearance of the instrument cluster was improved for 2005, though the gauges remain clear, straightforward and easy to read. There are also softer color packages, including cashmere, introduced for 2006. As it is, the interior is a mix of high-tech textures, some dimpled like a golf ball. Many of the materials are soft and interesting to the touch.  beyond aesthetics, the hardware works great. There's good support for the driver's right leg, and it's soft where the right shin touches. There's a good support for the left leg as well, with a good dead pedal for the left foot. Enthusiast drivers appreciate these for the bracing they provide during a spirited drive.  the three-spoke steering wheel has buttons for the sound system and cruise control, and is deliciously padded in leather for all but the part of the rim between about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, which is trimmed in wood. Changing the temperature, adjusting the stereo or operating the navigation system is easy and convenient in the cts. The center stack juts out from the rest of the dash, with the elaborate gps navigation system at the top center location. Climate controls are at the bottom, adjusted with amber-lighted pictograms.  the stereo works well, allowing quick and easy switching from a news channel on xm satellite radio to music on fm to traffic on am to a cd. The small triangular speakers for the optional bose system are mounted on the a pillar, and look cool. Onstar is standard, allowing drivers to make hands-free, voice-activated calls. The system comes standard in cars equipped with the navigation system. A driver can enter a destination into the navigation system, and then, aided by a color-coded display, obtain instant traffic data on the preferred route. The map display will show average speed along that route, as well as accident locations, construction and heavy traf. 2010 subaru legacy review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger, roomier, more powerful, quieter, smoother, more efficient. introductionthe subaru legacy sedan, succeeding for two decades, has been redesigned for 2010. The 2010 subaru legacy boasts fresh styling, a redesigned body structure, new engines, new transmissions, redesigned suspension, and a new interior with vastly increased roominess. All legacy models come with all-wheel drive. But it's only 1. 4 inches longer overall, thanks to shorter overhangs. Most of the many improvements are under the skin.  we found the 2010 legacy wonderfully comfortable, with roomy seats front and rear, and high-quality interior trim. We particularly liked the perforated leather on the limited models. These aren't luxury cars necessarily, but they are premium cars in terms of the quality of materials and the engineering that goes into them. The trunk on this sedan is quite large.  we found the 2010 subaru legacy 2. 5i, the base model, effortless to drive. The transmission works automatically, with nothing to do but put it in drive and go; the cvt gets good fuel economy. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, 60/40 split rear seat with armrest, steering wheel with audio and cruise control buttons, stereo with cd player and input jacks, remote entry, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Cvt is optional 1000).  the 2. 5i premium 20,995) adds a 10-way power driver's seat, alloy wheels and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The all-weather package is standard. Moonroof 995), harman kardon audio 995), and bluetooth 399) are optional, with ipod and usb connection an available accessory. A voice navigation system with backup camera is optional.  the 3. 6r 24,995) comes with the new 3. 6-liter six-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, along with 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. The 3. 6r premium 25,995) adds 10-way power driver's seat, all-weather package, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Character lines arc from the grille and form power bulges on the hood and taper upward to the a-pillar. The profile is sleeker, even though it's 3. 2 inches taller than before. The roofline is coupe-like, even with an increased greenhouse. The wider chassis spreads the front track by 2. 7 inches and rear track by 3. 3 inches, giving the legacy a noticeably wider stance.  but the styling element that is most noticeable is the aggressive wheel arches and edged flares, enhanced by handsome alloy wheels. Subaru has always offered good-looking wheels, although they are followers in the edgy fender flare department; the nissan altima coming to mind as the first sedan to embrace this look, and now pretty much everyone is there. Interestingly, it was the 2006 mitsubishi endeavor suv that started it all with its geo-mechanical look.  there's a short rear deck (deceptively covering the large trunk), with squared-off rear valances (smooth and not boxy), part of the standard aero package, giving an impression of size. Along with the 18-inch wheels with wide-profile tires and twin-tip exhaust, it's clear that the gt means business.  new unseen engineering for 2010: the new rigid chassis contributes to the silence of the interior. It's a full reinforced cage of high-strength steel, heavier, although the new legacy is still only 49 pounds heavier than before, thanks to weight-saving in other areas. More room.  more head room, leg room, hip room, shoulder room, front and rear. Exception: less front leg room, which is a practical place to borrow some leg room for the rear, because there's still 43 inches in front, and now 37. 8 inches in rear, an increase of 3. 9 inches over the pre-2010 legacy. Overall, there is an increase in passenger volume to 103 cubic feet (from 93. 5 in the previous car).  we found the front bucket seats wonderfully comfortable. Gas strut supports, no intrusion into trunk space: quality detail, for such an affordable midsize car. The rear doors are 15 inches wider (with double beams providing more strength against impact), for easier entry and exit.  the interior materials are higher quality all around. The controls on the center stack are all well done. The electronically controlled hvac system is all new, with powerful and quiet air conditioning and optional dual zone control. The three-spoke steering wheel isn't as handsome as the rest of the interior, although the optional leather wrap is nice. The ambient lighting for the console is pleasant. We like the legacy 2. 5i with the optional continuously variable transmission. Called a cvt, this transmission works automatically, with nothing to do but put it in drive and go. It makes driving effortless and gets 4 more miles per gallon than the six-speed manual gearbox. The cvt model comes with paddle shifters on the steering wheel allowing the driver to shift into different ratios. Called lineartronic, and driven by a chain (actually more of a metal belt) for durability, this compact cvt is subaru's first cvt in recent years, but the company was an early leader in the technology, making cvts some 20 years ago.  all three models have subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive, but they are different systems. This boxer-4 produces 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, which is about the same as before, but the torque peaks a bit lower at 4000 rpm. The 265-hp turbocharged engine gains 20 horsepower over the '09 model, but more importantly, because of a new larger turbocharger with a better.

2011 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A wide range of models is available. They're easy to drive, with ample windows that provide outstanding outward visibility.  we found ride quality in the civic solid but not overly firm, with less road noise and wind whistle than is common for the class. The stiff chassis gives the civic a solid and planted feel, with impressive stability and responsive steering, while the relatively long wheelbase smoothes the ride. Inside, the civic is pleasant, attractive and inviting. Bluetooth and navigation are available.  safety features include side-impact airbags as standard equipment. Vehicle stability assist electronic stability control comes on the civic ex-l, hybrid, and si models.  the 2011 honda civic comes in coupe and sedan versions. We found the civic lx sedan the most comfortable model. The hybrid model features dramatically reduced emissions, and it delivers an epa-rated 40/43 mpg city/highway.  the civic gx sedan uses natural gas for fuel. Natural gas is available to residents of california, new york, utah and oklahoma and is used by fleets elsewhere.  for 2011 the honda civic line remains essentially unchanged. Its styling was last freshened in 2009, after a total redesign for the 2006 model year. lineupthe 2011 honda civic dx coupe 15,605) and sedan 15,805) come with power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and fold-down rear seatback. The coupe gets a rear decklid spoiler. Brakes are disc in front, drum in rear. The p195/65r15 tires are on steel wheels with full wheelcovers. The civic lx-s sedan 18,355) upgrades to alloy wheels, exclusive sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and silver stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear deck spoiler, and a chrome exhaust tip. A 5-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the civic ex coupe and sedan 19,605) skip some of the lx-s model's fancy trim but add a power moonroof; variable-speed intermittent windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; and outside temperature indicator. The steering wheel adds audio controls; while the keyless remote adds a trunk release button. The sedan's stereo adds two speakers (for a total of six); while the coupe gets a 350-watt, seven-speaker system; both get a usb interface. Both ex models are also available with automatic transmission, xm satellite radio, and voice-recognition navigation 22,405). A 5-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the civic ex-l coupe and sedan 21,955) add leather seats with seat heaters, leather-trimmed steering wheel and armrest, heated mirrors, and vehicle stability assist and brake assist. They come only with a 6-speed manual transmission. Other go-fast goodies include a limited-slip differential, sports suspension, vehicle stability assist with traction control, and p215/45vr17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. Fog lights come standard. Inside are synthetic suede sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an aluminum shift knob. Both coupe and sedan get the 350-watt, seven-speaker stereo. Packages include high-performance tires for the coupe 22,405) and sedan 22,605); plus xm and navigation 24,205 and $24,405).  the civic hybrid sedan 23,950) features a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt), automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. Vehicle stability assist comes standard. The hybrid is available with the navigation system and xm satellite radio 25,950) and with a leather interior 25,150) including heated front seats and side mirrors, or with the leather package, navigation, and xm 27,150).  the civic gx 25,490) is essentially an lx sedan with a 1. 8-liter engine powered by natural gas. It comes only with a 5-speed automatic transmission. walkaroundhonda civic comes in two distinct body styles, sedan and coupe, and they do not share any body panels. The honda civic sedan has a lower grille with a tall, trapezoidal center opening and secondary scoop-like openings on either side. A grid-like insert in the center opening contrasts with a kind of cyclone-fence theme in the side scoops. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders; visually connecting them is a bright bar with the honda h at the center and another slim air opening underneath. Around back, another bright chrome bar connects the taillights just above the indentation for the license plate.  the coupe's upper grille has the honda logo centered in an oval-themed black mesh, with a more shallow lower trapezoidal opening, and scoops at either side that are drawn out wide and horizontal and divided midway by a horizontal strut.  save for a lower body character line, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters break up the otherwise featureless expanse. Honda calls it a monoform design, and a central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the coupe's spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests sleek swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  details and markings distinguish each trim level.  on the si sedan, the grille bar is black instead of chrome. On both the coupe and sedan, an si badge tucks into the grille's lower left side, and oval fog lights are set into the bumper's outboard openings. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. A rear spoiler wraps over the outboard edges of the sedan's trunk lid; on the coupe, the spoiler is free-standing. Both sedan and coupe roll on their own unique alloy wheels. The hybrid is understated, with just a small hybrid badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom. The si models get sport front seats with synthetic suede upholstery and more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but otherwise there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side rear-view mirrors a bit too far rearward for quick and easy glances at neighboring lanes.  controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Despite the seeming logic of the two-tier instrument display, we still haven't adjusted to the resulting weird pod draped over the top of the dash.  the dash itself seems endlessly deep; draped across its top, in front of the driver, is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for instruments, a large, round, analog tachometer dominates the view through the top half of the steering wheel, with warning lights to either side. Outboard of this display are la.

2012 volkswagen jetta sedan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid execution of an affordable compact sedan. introductionthe volkswagen jetta is a compact car offered in a variety of models and body styles. The sedan received a controversial redesign for 2011 that included cheaper interior materials, less sophisticated technologies, and a lower starting price. It adds a sportier turbocharged gli model for 2012 that reclaims some of that lost content. That engine is somewhat archaic, however.  a better value is the 2012 jetta se for $18,495, which brings the five-cylinder 2. 5-liter engine making 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, while getting almost the same fuel economy.  the five-cylinder, 20-valve 2. 5-liter engine is a volkswagen stalwart, providing good power for the jetta's needs. It accelerates from zero to 60 in 8. 5 seconds with the 6-speed automatic, and powers the jetta to a top speed of 127 mph, so there's plenty in reserve. We prefer the automatic, because the transmission is so good.  the sport mode for the optional 6-speed automatic transmission is sharp and effective. We used it in city driving, where it responded crisply on san francisco's hills, and in slow-and-go freeway traffic, where it kept the transmission in third gear rather than upshifting and downshifting all the time. It can only be shifted through the gearshift; paddle shifters are neither available nor necessary. In manual mode, the transmission is programmed well, responsive and obedient.  the 2012 jetta tdi sedan, $22,595, and sportwagen, $25,260, use the latest turbodiesel direct-injected engine, making 140 horsepower with a useful 236 pound-feet of torque, while getting an impressive 30/42 mpg.  to get the price down, volkswagen reverted to some less expensive engineering, such as a rear torsion beam suspension and drum brakes in jetta s and se models. The vast majority of drivers will never miss the multi-link suspension and rear discs. Other cost-cutting measures involve interior materials, and these are more evident. The jetta has always been known for high interior quality, and that's no longer the case. On the other hand, the styling is still quite attractive and interior room is improved.  the sedan's interior is clean, stylish and comfortable, while being smart, accommodating, and functional. The trim is tasteful, and the standard cloth seats fit well, while the optional v-tex leatherette upholstery passes easily for real leather. Headroom and rear legroom are outstanding, nearly as roomy as a bmw 7 series, and vw makes smart use of cupholders and little storage cubbies. Still, build quality is impressive. The jetta is quiet at speed and feels solid.  the new gli model reclaims some of the jetta sedan's lost interior quality. The dashboard is made of a soft-touch material, and vw adds accent stitching to the shifter, seats and steering wheel.  the jetta gli features a 200-horsepower 2. 0-liter turbo engine, accelerating from zero to 60 in 6. 8 seconds using the magical dsg twin-clutch automated manual transmission. It also rides a shorter wheelbase, so it has less rear seat room. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on s and se models, and a 6-speed automatic is optional 1,100). The jetta se sedan 18,495) adds v-tex leatherette upholstery, trunk passthrough, heated power mirrors with turn signals, illuminated visor mirrors, floormats, and p205/55hr16 tires. The tdi sedan 22,525) is equipped like the se with convenience package, but it also gets a hill-holder clutch, 4-wheel disc brakes and a trip computer. Also offered are the tdi sportwagen with sunroof 27,010), which adds a sunroof and p225/45hr17 tires, and the tdi with sunroof and navigation 27,840), which adds a navigation system and keyless access and starting.  the gli is only offered as a sedan. It comes with a 200-horsepower turbocharged 2. 0-liter gasoline engine. In addition to se equipment, the base gli 23,495) has a hill-holder clutch, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, driver-seat lumbar adjustment, satellite radio, ipod interface, bluetooth, trip computer, cooled glovebox, fog lights, sport suspension, and p225/45hr17 tires on alloy wheels. The gli autobahn 25,545) adds automatic climate control, v-tex upholstery, heated front seats, sunroof, heated windshield washers, and p225/40hr18 tires. And the gli autobahn with navigation 26,445) has navigation system, keyless access and starting, and the fender sound system.  options include a ground effects kit with body cladding and chrome exhaust tips 1,995 sedan, $2,299 sportwagen); a protection package 430) with rubber floormats, a cargo net and mudguards; an appearance package 520) with rubber floormats, a cargo mat, a cargo net and a rear spoiler; the ipod interface 425), bluetooth 425); a rear spoiler 375 sedan, $499 sportwagen); p225/45hr17 tires with alloy wheels 1,325); and p225/40r18 tires on alloy wheels 2,199 gli and sportwagen, $1,549 other models).  safety features on all jettas includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist, traction control, electronic stability control, and the mandated tire-pressure monitor. The sedan, redesigned for 2011, is three inches longer than the previous-generation models, with a wider track.  the jetta sedan is more shapely than before with curves that are subtle and sweet. The door handles are body color and there is very little chrome trim. Even the new grille is anti-chrome, with black horizontal bars, as well as a tray-shaped front spoiler under the front bumper that suggests the splitter on a race car. It's an upscale improvement over the previous jetta's bigger mouth.  nowhere is the jetta sedan overstyled or oversculpted; vw has it over bmw in that area. The lines are crisp and precise, with strong wheel arches, a smooth roofline and attractive c pillars. The nose and shoulders, viewed from the side of the car looking forwar.

2007 porsche cayman review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's a boxster coupe, only better. introductionthe porsche cayman is basically a boxster coupe. But porsche doesn't like that description because the cayman's character makes it an individual machine. Its fresh styling is striking, for one thing; and the rigidity of its chassis takes the handling from great to brilliant. Enthusiast publications have gone so far as to call it a masterpiece, out of the box. Cayman was introduced as an all-new model for 2006.  the 3. 4-liter boxer six engine is mounted behind the seats, giving the car ideal balance and bringing a sweet but not loud 7000-rpm howl into the cabin. The standard cayman, which costs about $10,000 less, uses a 2. 7-liter version of the same engine, making 50 less horsepower with a five-speed gearbox. The ride is naturally firm, but comfortable all day long.  the cabin has the quality of a luxury car, while keeping the focus on function. The cayman comes standard with a digital radio with in-dash cd and eight-speaker system, and the cayman s has a bose surround sound system. Thanks to a large amount of storage space for a sports car, two people could travel across the country and be very happy: never tired, never inconvenienced, and excited by the performance. And the cayman will deliver 25 miles per gallon along the way.  big trucks might be intimidating on the highway because the cayman is low to the ground, but it's still a very safe vehicle, with a chassis engineered to withstand a crash, those superb anti-lock brakes, sophisticated electronic stability, and three airbags per occupant: frontal, thorax and head. lineupthe porsche cayman 49,400) uses a 2. 7-liter engine, a liquid-cooled boxer six making 245 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 201 pound-feet of torque between 4600 and 6000 rpm. A five-speed gearbox is standard. The five-speed automatic tiptronic s transmission 3,210) is optional. The front brake rotors are 11. 73 inches in diameter and 0. 94 inches thick, while the rears measure 11. 78 by 0. 79 inches. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard, with 205/55 front and 235/50 rear tires.  the cayman s 58,900) uses the same engine bored out to 3. 4 liters; it's less stressed, with a slightly lower compression ratio and fewer horsepower per liter. It makes 295 horsepower, peaking at 6250 rpm. Torque is pumped up to 251 pound-feet, peaking at 4400 rpm and staying there to 6000. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with the five-speed tiptronic s 3,210) optional. Brakes are bigger, with rotors that are 12. 52 x 1. 10 inches in front, and 11. 78 x . 94 rear; the 18-inch alloy wheels take 235/40 zr18 front tires, and 265/40 zr18 at the rear. The cayman s also gets a nine-speaker bose surround sound system.  standard equipment includes power windows, cruise control, air conditioning, carbon-filter ventilation system, power leather seats, heated sideview mirrors, digital radio with in-dash cd and eight-speaker system.  options include a choice of leather trim that can be ordered for virtually every interior piece of the car, including the dash, sun visors and steering column. Other options include bi-xenon headlamps 1090), 19-inch wheels and tires 1550), and lightweight ceramic brake discs 2000) meant to improve hard braking on the track. That's $2000 per wheel. The 911 carrera is so familiar, after all these years, that people scarcely look twice any more. The boxster was fresh, when it was introduced 10 years ago. And although the cayman looks like a boxster from the windshield forward (it uses the same body panels), its haunches are sleek and striking.  it brings grace to the boxster's shape by adding a sleek roof. The last remnants of the upside-down bathtub are blown away by the styling (if not by 295 horsepower). The slope of the roofline is shallow and long, like a beginner ski run. From the rear, there's something almost '50s fastback about the roof (without feeling retro), as well as the fenders that are suggestive of the porsche 550 of that era.  the cayman looks sleekest from the rear three-quarter point of view. Very cool twin exhaust tips poke out together from under the center rear of the car, another touch that dates to the '50s.  the huge air intakes for the engine, located under the quarter-windows and just forward of the rear wheels, identify the car as being serious. Big red brake calipers shout for attention through the spaces between the sprawling five spokes of the alloy wheels. A horizontal aerodynamic tray runs under each door and flows gently up behind the air scoops, taking the shape of a hockey stick lying on its edge. Sounds goofy, but looks good.  forward of the windshield, the cayman loses some of its originality, although the chin, too, improves on the boxster. The three horizontal openings below the headlamps are more aggressive on the cayman, with round foglamps mounted on slats in the outer two holes. From every angle, the cayman is more stylish than the boxster. interiorthe cabin of the porsche cayman declares high performance. If the upside-down bathtub profile is long gone, the porsche instrument panel retains its classic look. Exterior styling and aerodynamics are one thing, but instrument panels are more about visual efficiency, and the general idea that worked in 1957 still works in 2007. Not just the instruments, because technology has changed them, but the overall feel, including the seating position relative to the steering wheel. This shelf serves as the engine cover, and supports storage bins at each end. The glovebox is relatively big, and contains two outward-swinging cupholders that can hold huge drinks. The console has two more storage compartments, an open one forward and a covered space containing a coin holder and 12-volt power outlet at the rear. When we fired it up for a sunday drive on a cold winter morning, after it had been sitting in the garage for a few days, it blew out some blue smoke before settling down into a light noisy idle. Its 251 peak pound-feet of torque arrives at 4400 rpm and stays there to 6000. One hundred mph is 4000 rpm, where it's perfectly smooth. Top speed is 171 mph as measured on the track, and it'll do zero to 60 in 5. 1 seconds with the six-speed gearbox.  the vario-ratio steering is effortless. The cayman is much easier to turn (and drive at high speed) than, say, the bmw z4 m coupe. Car and driver magazine recently did a head-to-head comparison test between the two cars, and the cayman s got the nod, for its racier chassis. Other enthusiast publications agree that it's more stable and sure-footed than either the boxster s or carrera 911. We didn't have those porsche. 2008 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Restyling freshens fun-to-drive coupe. introductionthe scion tc has been subtly restyled inside and out for 2008. Apple ipod connectivity comes standard along with a pioneer subwoofer. And navigation is now available.  the scion tc is an affordably priced but thoroughly practical and well-equipped sport coupe. It benefits from toyota's attention to quality, durability and reliability. The body panels fit tight and straight, and quality construction is evident. Interior materials are first-rate, and show attention to detail. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. It is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. Its steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. A full array of airbags is available to enhance safety.  the scion nameplate may represent toyota's next-generation future, but in some ways the 2008 scion tc brings a welcome blast from the past, when sport coupes were often regarded as a kind of blank canvas for personal expression. This price buys a surprising amount of standard equipment, including air conditioning; reclining front sport bucket seats with cloth upholstery and position memory; height and tilt adjustments for driver's seat; power locks and mirrors with integrated turn signals; a tilt wheel with audio controls; 160-watt pioneer am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with subwoofer and ipod connectivity; a huge, power-retracting glass sunroof; a two-tiered console; reclining rear seats; keyless entry; engine immobilizer; cargo cover, and a dozen other comfort and convenience goodies. It all rolls on p215/45zr bridgestone potenzas on 17-inch alloy wheels.  the lower-priced spec package is also available with manual 15,300) or automatic 16,100). The idea here is to provide a stripped-down model for tuners and customizers, so they don't pay for fancy parts that they are just going to take off and replace anyway. Spec package models come with downgraded upholstery on less-adjustable seats, non-tilting urethane steering wheel without audio controls, and p205/55r16 tires on steel wheels. They also skip the core model's power windows, cruise control, two-tier console, subwoofer, and engine immobilizer. The panoramic glass roof remains but it does not retract. Colors are limited to super white, flint mica, black sand pearl, and classic silver metallic.  safety features for all tc scions include optional side-impact and side-curtain air bags 650) designed to provide torso and head protection. (head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts.) a knee airbag is standard, along with the mandated dual front airbags. Anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution are standard also, as is a tire-pressure monitor.  options include a premium pioneer sound system with video capabilities 689); and a navigation system 2,250) with seven-inch touch screen. There are no other factory options, but scion dealers offer more than 40 dealer-installed accessories, ranging from shift knobs and satellite radio (either xm or sirius) to a supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower. Special toyota racing development (trd) items include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quicker shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. walkaroundthe somewhat bland styling of the 2005-07 scion tc was intentional, offering a blank canvas for hot-rodders and customizers. Frankly, we liked its look of purposeful performance. The 2008 scion tc certainly looks more sophisticated, but whether it looks better is a matter of taste.  most changed is the front end, where the headlight housings now contain three sharply defined separate lenses for high beams, projector-type low beams, and amber turn signals, all arranged in a subtle diagonal. The top and bottom grille textures no longer match, with a fussy diagonal-oval mesh up top that fades to solid at the sides; and horizontal slats down below. As before, a thin, led center stop light appears gray until it lights up; and the bottom edge of the bumper sports a prominent horizontal pout.  otherwise the outside isn't much changed, and that's a good thing. Even the standard six-double-spoke alloy wheels are carried over from last year.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles are of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared to avoid sunburned occupants. All of the body panels fit tight and straight, and quality flows from every pore. interiorinside the 2008 scion tc are first-rate materials. There aren't a lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system are a marvel of modern design. Scion has pumped up the volume a bit for 2008, adding metallic accents that match the center stack to the steering wheel spokes and door-mounted grab handles. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a sleep position.  the core model's rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  attention to detail is evident in the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo faceplate.  the three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. The metal-tone center console features a cast-aluminum temperature control dial flanked by soft-touch electronic buttons and an lcd display showing exterior temperature, seven fan speeds and a clock. Sirius and xm satellite radio are optional.  the head unit allows ipod owners to listen to their tunes through the car speakers and to control song selection and read stored information through the head unit's display. Also standard (on core models) for 2008 is a pioneer six-inch subwoofer with 35-watt maximum power, tuned specifically for the tc. This compact unit is mounted in the under-floor storage area, keeping it out of sight and leaving the cargo floor clear.  the optional premium audio adds the ability to download skins to play on the head unit's organic electroluminescent (oel) faceplate. Pioneer software also allows customers to burn their own images and movies onto a cd and upload them onto the head unit.  the premium audio system comes with rear head unit outputs, allowing the addition of external amps to boost power to additional speakers and subwoofers. Scion claims that none of these modifications will affect the operation of head unit's standard features.  both the standard and premium head units feature scion sound processing (ssp), which allows listeners to choose from three pre-set equalizer settings; automatic sound leveling (asl); and sound retouch technology (srt), which provides clearer cd sound quality. driving impressionthe 2008 scion tc is fun to drive. The engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car; and at full throttle, it sounds potent without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsep.
